SustainabilitybyAlex is a freelance training and advisory practice specialising in climate literacy, sustainability education, and responsible and sustainable leadership.
Led by Dr Alex Mifsud, an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) academic and practitioner with more than 25 years of international experience, SustainabilitybyAlex works with higher education institutions, SMEs, organisations and communities across Europe.
We believe sustainability education and training should do more than raise awareness. It should build the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand complex challenges, make informed decisions and take meaningful action.
Our work combines academic rigour with practical experience, translating complex sustainability and climate issues into clear, engaging and applicable learning. We deliver an internationally recognised and accredited climate literacy training, responsible and sustainable leadership development, as well as tailored sustainability support for organisations and higher education institutions.
What makes SustainabilitybyAlex different?
We are intentionally small and expert-led. You work directly with an experienced ESD professional rather than through a large consultancy or corporate training provider. Drawing on our doctoral research, this approach allows us to understand your context, challenges and ambitions and develop support that is relevant to your needs.
Our approach is collaborative, interactive and evidence-informed. We use dialogue, reflection and practical activities to help people shift from awareness to understanding, and from understanding to action.
We work with people at different points in their sustainability journey — from those taking their first steps in climate literacy to organisations seeking to embed sustainability more deeply into strategy, leadership, curriculum and everyday practice.

About Alex
I'm Dr Alex Mifsud, an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) academic and practitioner with more than 25 years of international experience in sustainability, climate education and leadership.
My academic journey began with a B.Ed. from the University of Malta, followed by an M.A. in Environmental Education from Nottingham Trent University and a Ph.D. in Education for Sustainable Development from London South Bank University.
Over the course of my career, I have held academic and leadership roles in Malta, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium, including Assistant Professor and Deputy Programme Leader for the Masters in Global Sustainable Business Management at Northumbria University Amsterdam, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Malta, where I was also a co-founding member of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research (CEER).
I currently work as a Research Expert at Hasselt University, contributing to EU-funded Erasmus+ and INTERREG projects. I have also designed and delivered climate literacy training for universities and organisations, supporting more than 400 professionals and students to achieve climate literacy certification. I co-authored a university carbon literacy toolkit that received Gold at the 2021 QS Reimagine Education Awards.
Alongside my academic work, I have provided sustainability education and training consultancy to organisations including the Energy and Water Agency Malta and HSBC Malta, served on national and institutional advisory boards, and delivered climate literacy training in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and the UAE.
